When Roseanne Barr appeared on Dr. Oz Tuesday, she opened the book on the tweets that got her fired from ABC.
First, she claimed that the sleeping medication Ambien caused her to write a series of bizarre tweets. Then, she defended herself against charges of racism, maintaining that she never called Barack Obama’s black adviser Valerie Jarrett an ape, simple made a reference to the film Planet of the Apes, which she claimed was politically motivated.
“Well I’ve done some weird things on Ambien. And I think a lot of people have too, I’ve heard from thousands of people about it. One guy got up and cooked a turkey and ate it so that was like four hours if you think about it and when he got up in the morning he didn’t remember. And all the time that happens to me when I’m in the kitchen and there’s a whole box of Triscuits out and like eggs cracked on the walls. I Ambien eat like Tiger Woods Ambien drove. It’s a weird drug.”
When Dr. Oz pointed out that racism is not a side effect of Ambien, she concurred.
ON JARRETT’S RACE:
[“No I said Planet of the Apes. That’s a movie, you’re trying… I know what you’re doing. I said Planet of the Apes, which is a science-fiction movie about the overthrow of evil overlords such as Iran. I have apologized for the following too. I thought Valerie Jarrett was an Iranian woman as a lot of other people did too. I didn’t know that she was an African American woman. When I saw her on TV and she’s doing her DNA test, she’s also 46% European. So let’s just move past it.”] (SOUNDCUE: :45 …move past it)
ON LEAVING TOWN
Barr also spoke out about how her erstwhile Roseanne costars are moving on with The Conners reboot without her in October. She said that she plans to travel to Israel when the show begins and study Hebrew.
“Oh, yeah, I don’t want to be around, because I, you know, I’ll get drawn into a negative thing of defending myself or being angry for being mischaracterized and, you know, I don’t. I want to stay away from it. I want to stay in a joyous, positive, happy place that I’ve worked my way to again in my life.”
Over the weekend, Barr claimed the show would kill off her character via an opioid overdose, but that has not been confirmed.
