On Monday, Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon officially announced her bid to be New York’s next governor. In order to become the first woman ever elected to lead the Empire State (she’d also be New York’s first openly gay governor), Nixon will have to knock off incumbent Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary. “We want our government to work again, on health care, ending mass incarceration, fixing our broken subway,” she said in a video unveiling her candidacy. “We are sick of politicians who care more about headlines and power than they do about us. It can’t just be business as usual anymore.” The New York Times notes that two former strategists for NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, who’s frequently clashed with Cuomo, have signed on to advise Nixon’s campaign.
